Sufficiency of Scripture

As a follower of Christ it is essential to grasp the power of the word of God. It is necessary to understand how it works in our lives. First we must examine what it is. We must not take it lightly. It is our food for life.

Hebrews 4:12-13 gives us a clear description of what the word is and what it does.

12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

It pierces our hearts. It opens us up. Nothing is hidden from it. It is the divine word from God. It is alive and life giving.

In John 6:63 Jesus tells us

“63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.”

It is clear here that it comes to us through the Holy Spirit and it is life giving.

It is sharp like a sword. It cuts into our hearts. It is piercing. It performs open heart surgery.

The word of God able to judge the soul providing us with the divine verdict. It examines my motives and bores right down to our secret lives and reveals me to me.  The word strips us naked before God. We are laid bare before Him. It convicts us of sin. Through the word we see ourselves in relation to God and wields a death blow to the self.

So it serves as a mirror to view ourselves and our sins.

James 1:23-24 tells us

23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. 24 For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like.

Knowledge of God equal knowledge of self. God’s word reveals to us who we are in relation to the holiness of our God.

1st Peter 1:23 tells us  “23 since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God;”

A seed is the germ of life. The word is the spirit of reproduction. It gives us new birth and implants the truth of God into our hearts. It produces life eternal, life divine.

The word of God is like milk that nourishes the soul. 1st Peter 2:2 tells us “Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation—”.

As God’s children we long for the pure milk of the word. Through the pure milk of the word we grow in grace. Pure milk equals pure thoughts. The truth is what we take in is what we become. The word is spiritual growth food that produces holiness.

The word of God is like a lamp. It produces light. Psalm 119:105 tells us “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”  It lights our path and serves as a guide in a dark world. It guides our feet and keeps us on the righteous path.

Jeremiah 23:29 tells us “29 Is not my word like fire, declares the Lord, and like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?”. God’s word is a consuming fire. We are either on fire for the Lord or we are in the fire of God’s judgement.

It is clear that for the born again christian the word of God is not only necessary but essential if we are to walk in the Spirit and serve our loving, merciful Savior.
